Round Sixteen Awards (2006)
In October 2006, the Fannie Mae Foundation announced the Round Sixteen of the Maxwell Awards of Excellence awardees in Washington, D.C.
For Round Sixteen of the Maxwell Awards of Excellence, the Fannie Mae Foundation partnered with the National Vacant Properties Campaign. In 2006, the Foundation awarded four grants of $50,000 each to projects showcasing excellence in the reclamation of vacant and abandoned properties in the production of affordable housing.
The reclamation of vacant and abandoned properties to create affordable housing is one innovative way to address the affordable housing challenge — one that strengthens communities by redeveloping blighted properties, making communities vibrant places once again while also providing much-needed affordable housing. By revitalizing vacant lots and abandoned buildings as part of a larger strategy, communities can create desirable mixed-use and mixed-income neighborhoods close to transportation and job centers at the same time that they offer affordable opportunities to home buyers and renters.
Awards for projects that reclaim vacant and abandoned property in the production of affordable housing were made in the following three categories:
- Most impressive overall affordable housing benefit
- Most successful public/private partnership
- Most effective catalyst for community revitalization
