Innovation Awardee Models a New State Approach to Ending Homelessness
Homeless people need supportive housing: a permanent place to live plus access to services. Connecticut has made supportive housing the heart of its efforts to address homelessness. For its innovative approach and strong commitment to systemic change, the Connecticut Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative won this year's $100,000 Fannie Mae Foundation Innovations in Affordable Housing Award.
Perspectives
Harvard professor Stephen Goldsmith sees the progress that is possible when government taps cooperative instincts. Three past and present recipients of the Innovations in Affordable Housing Award illustrate the point: King County, Washington's A Regional Coalition for Housing; the Los Angeles Systematic Code Enforcement Program; and Connecticut's Supportive Housing Pilots Initiative Program.
Semifinalists for the Innovations in American Government Award in Affordable Housing Lead by Example
Other jurisdictions could replicate the four highlighted semifinalist programs, which embody creativity, competence, and sustained effort. Included are Washington State's assisted-living alternative; San Jose, California's affordable housing production program; Genesee County, Michigan's land bank program; and Vermont's Housing and Conservation Board.
